DaaS is back baby!

After what seems like years it’s finally happened – Support for M365 apps (Basically Office) is now out of preview and available for Server 2022.

Boom baby!

This brings back opportunity for Hosters, MSP’s and Customers.

Firstly – this is something Microsoft has always tried to restrict with programs and complicated licensing, from the QMTH program for multi-tenant hosters, to discounts if you are running on Azure.

In some ways it’s understandable that they do this – it’s their software and they want to control the customer experience, and where possible retain revenue. In actuality it has led to dissatisfaction from customers, the rise (albeit not as fast as we thought) of competitive office products like Google Workspace, and the partner community (always one of Microsoft’s strong suites) having to work around licensing restrictions or provide solutions that were not the best for the customer.

The kicker: Cost                     

Prior to this a much more expensive SPLA version of Office had to be licensed for a MSP or Hosting company to deliver Office via RDS. The implication with this change, and the licensing changes coming thanks to the European Cloud challenges means M365 Apps becomes a viable way to deliver Office on Hosted Infrastructure.
